Program description
La Maison Française (LMF) is a five-week, non-credit, French immersion program popular with young adults at all levels of proficiency, from beginner to advanced. Start at your own level; finish with a certificate. With experienced instructors, dynamic cultural assistants and state-of-the-art language lab facilities, you will quickly learn to function in French. Lessons, laboratory sessions, workshops, mealtime conversations and sociocultural activities all create a French atmosphere.
This program includes four hours of classroom instruction, from 8:30 am to 12:30 pm, Monday to Friday; three hours of workshops per week; and sociocultural activities afternoons, evenings and weekends. The curriculum is divided into several levels of linguistic competencies. On the first day, you will complete a level assessment to be placed at the appropriate level.
On-campus accommodation, including meal plan, is mandatory for all Explore bursary students and optional for all other students. The meal plan food card is usable in all UVic Food Services locations on campus.
Bursaries are available under the Explore program to Canadian citizens and permanent residents who have been a full-time student for at least one term during the current school year. Bursaries are also available to BC Teachers — many of whom choose to take this program for professional development in the summer — by contacting us directly at french@uvcs.uvic.ca
* Please note that most participants are between 19 and 25 years of age, therefore most of the evening and weekend sociocultural activities are planned accordingly.
