Advisor, Occupational Health and Safety (OHS)

Full-time position – 37.5 hr. / week

SUMMARY

Reporting directly to the Chief Operating Officer, you will act as an advisor and change agent to create a culture of OHS accountability. You will make sure the Corporation complies with the Canada Labour Code and will help develop and implement various programs, while ensuring their effectiveness. You will also help draft and implement the Corporation’s strategic OHS plan.

MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES

Guidance and support

  • Support managers in integrating OHS activities;
  • Assist project officers or other individuals in charge of conducting prevention audits at our construction sites;
  • Inspect work sites with managers;
  • Perform OHS audits in the Corporation’s departments and monitor OHS action plan activities;
  • Help managers and members of the local OHS committee monitor preventive measures, accident investigations and corrective measures.

Representation and advice

  • Represent the Corporation as a spokesperson for internal and external committees;
  • Exercise functional authority and act as a go-to expert for managers on prevention, compliance with OHS laws and regulations, and compliance with the Corporation’s OHS policies, procedures and programs;
  • Establish and maintain effective communications with managers and members of the local OHS committee;
  • Attend local OHS committee meetings as a consultant;
  • Draft the guidelines for “the Corporation’s other activities,” including inspections, the Operations and Maintenance work team, leases and permits, and any individuals granted access.

Development

  • Standardize OHS work methods/procedures;
  • Develop work tools and assess hazardous tasks;
  • Develop required prevention programs and procedures and make sure they are implemented;
  • Develop innovative OHS awareness and occupational well-being programs (project management, concept design, tool box, rollout).

Training

  • Develop or request OHS training programs, hold training sessions, and follow up by performing audits;
  • Develop and manage the OHS onboarding program on sites managed by the Corporation.

Analysis/Metrics

  • Help prepare monthly, quarterly and annual performance indicator reports;
  • Develop measures with the Human Resources department;
  • Review accident statistics and recommend solutions;
  • Draft and manage contracts related to the position;
  • Perform other related tasks and duties.

REQUIREMENTS

  • Bachelor’s degree in human resources/industrial relations and/or Bachelor’s degree including an OHS certificate and/or other relevant training;
  • At least eight (8) years’ experience in a similar position;
  • ASP Construction certification, an asset;
  • Certified Auditor certification – OHS management systems, an asset;
  • Advanced knowledge of federal and provincial (Quebec) OHS laws and regulations;
  • Knowledge of injury management, prevention and financial aspects;
  • Knowledge of OHS laws and regulations;
  • Experience in media relations, an asset;
  • Very good communication skills; ability to give presentations to groups of people, provide information in plain language, and interact with stakeholders;
  • Excellent ability to coordinate activities;
  • Ability to work with various stakeholders in various work settings;
  • Excellent knowledge of Microsoft Office;
  • Ability to communicate verbally and in writing in both official languages.
