Environmental Scientist
Our client is one of the largest biggest business law firms in Canada. Their firm serves many large industrial companies, as well as real estate, commercial, and financial institutions; their clients are based in Canada, in the United States, and outside North America. Our client is currently looking for an environmental scientist to provide support to their lawyers in environmental law.
Nature of position
In cooperation with lawyers practising environmental law, your job will primarily consist of providing support to the environmental law group and facilitating exchanges between the legal side and the scientific/technical side of various files (mergers and acquisitions, sales/purchases of businesses, sales/purchases of land, investments and financing, real estate and industrial projects, regulatory compliance, litigation, etc.).
- Carry out evaluations of environmental compliance issues (e.g. air, wastewater, waste management, etc.) and review applicable regulatory and administrative requirements;
- Evaluate available options for corrective action in files dealing with compliance;
- Search for, identify, and hire technical experts to identify and implement corrective action or to support the defence in the event of penal and/or criminal prosecution;
- Evaluate environmental conditions of contaminated land (that is, environmental evaluation reports for Phase I and Phase II sites, as well as remediation reports) pursuant to due diligence reviews for the purposes of transactions and/or for the purposes of compliance and to help clients evaluate their responsibility and to plan remediation of sites, as the case may be;
- Review and analyze infrastructure and natural resources projects, including evaluations of significant risks related to permits and mitigation measures;
- Provide support on litigation files by reviewing files and carrying out required research related to technical issues;
- Write up summaries related to reviews, evaluations, and analyses performed and provide support in the writing of reports for clients;
- Provide support in the coordination and revision of technical reports before they are finalized and submitted to clients;
- Carry out any other task related to your duties.
Required qualification
- Bachelor's degree or master's degree in civil engineering, geotechnical engineering, biology, or other relevant university studies;
- Minimum of 5 years of relevant experience;
- Experience in the field of environmental compliance audits and/or contaminated land management;
- Have an understanding of provincial and federal standards dealing with environmental compliance and remediation of contaminated land, as well as environmental evaluation procedures and authorizations; Bilingual (spoken and written French and English);
- Bilingual (spoken and written French and English);
- Excellent communication skills, organizational skills, and time management skills, as well as strong problem-solving skills;
- Able to work independently.
